Pole Meen Curry is a light, brothy fish curry prepared with fresh catch from the forest streams (pole) flowing through Kodagu's lush coffee estates. Without the heaviness of coconut, the broth is infused with crushed ginger, garlic, sharp slit green chillies, and finished with a sour kiss of Kachampuli. Cooked gently in an earthen pot, the delicate stream fish remains tender and flaky.

- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 6 green chillies, slit lengthwise
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp Kachampuli (or fresh lemon juice)
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1/2 tsp salt (to taste)

Method
- Clean and rinse the small stream fish thoroughly, pat dry, and season lightly with a pinch of turmeric and salt.
- Heat coconut oil in a wide clay chatti over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, slit green chillies, and ginger-garlic paste, sautéing for 3–4 minutes until soft and fragrant.
- Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt, and 1.5 cups of water, stirring well.
- Bring the curry liquid to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
- Carefully slide the cleaned fish pieces into the boiling broth in a single layer.
- Drizzle the Kachampuli evenly over the surface.
- Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer gently for 7–8 minutes until the fish is cooked through; do not use a spoon to stir—simply swirl the pot gently by its handles.
