Nagarhole and Iruppu: Forest, Water, Road

The reserve opens like a green room: teak, rosewood, and lantana thickets where a tusker might cross without warning. Keep your windows up and your camera ready. A morning safari is the obvious reason to come. The forest department jeeps move in quiet convoys, drivers communicating in hand signals. You might see spotted deer in herds, a lone gaur in a clearing, or, if the day is generous, a tiger's stripe vanishing into the bamboo. More reliably, you will hear the forest: cicadas, woodpeckers, and the alarm calls that travel faster than any vehicle. After lunch, drive toward [Iruppu Falls](/blog/iruppu-nagarhole-daytrip). The trail begins at the Rameshwara temple and climbs through shola forest, the air already wet from spray. The falls drop in three visible stages, loudest at the base where pilgrims stand under the plunge pool. The water here is said to carry the Lakshmana Tirtha southward, and the rocks under your feet agree. Return by dusk. The forest will have changed colour twice.
